I half-read the blog post (I know, I "should" have read the whole thing, but I didn't) and commented on how interesting it was that coaches who have trouble making it as life coaches often conclude that *nobody* can make it as a coach (what I didn't say was that kind of negative generalization can stop anybody from succeeding at anything). Obviously, [life coaches *are* making](https://www.schoolofcoachingmastery.com/coaching-blog/bid/82347/Life-Coach-Salary-How-Much-Money-Do-Professional-Coaches-Make) it or the profession wouldn't continue to grow like an out-of-control wild fire. It turned out the blog post was really about a marketing program the writer was trying to sell to life coaches. That's an age-old approach to making money: convince someone they have a problem, then sell them the solution. Fortunately, there are ways to attract paying clients that don't involved cutting them off at the knees, like this. Along with everything else, marketing and sales have evolved. **The real question here is can YOU make a living as a life coach?** That of course, depends on you. Everybody dreams of being their own boss, but not everybody is comfortable with it. In fact, there's an age-old joke amongst entrepreneurs, that we're all working for lunatics (Oops! There's another generalization). To get a customized answer to that question (because only a customized answer will do for that question), you may want to work with your own coach. Why? Because people will naturally want your help and will eventually, accidentally even, suck you dry. A dried-up coach = useless. But saying NO requires discipline, because it feels good to help. And it feels really good to help for free. And it's real easy to [get clients](https://www.schoolofcoachingmastery.com/coach-100-premium/) when you're doing a great job of helping everybody for free. But it's unprofessional. Charity is a beautiful thing under the right circumstances. Coaching isn't one of them. Charitable coaching is unprofessional, because when you coach clients for free, or for too little, it undermines their potential. People play small when they don't have enough skin in the game. That's just how we're wired. It feels challenging - scary even - to [ask people to pay for coaching](https://www.schoolofcoachingmastery.com/coaching-blog/bid/82347/Life-Coach-Salary-How-Much-Money-Do-Professional-Coaches-Make). But get paid you must, unless you're independently wealthy. So that's another reason why coaching for free is unprofessional. Here's a third reason why coaching for free is unprofessional. It allows YOU to play small, because coaching for free lets you off the hook when it comes to delivering great value. I'm not saying that coaches should never coach for free of low fee. It's okay to do that at first (I even recomemmend it), or later if you're changing your business, but be sure you know what you're getting in return, such as experience, learning, referrals, or something else that will pay off in the long run. Bottom Line: People reach their Greatness when they are givers, but you can receive even while you're giving. And if you don't receive for your coaching, the other people (a.k.a. your clients) won't reach their Greatness. And isn't Greatness what coaching's all about? [![Get Paid to Coach. Of course, you don't know how to do it - yet. #### **But I'll let you in on a little secret.** **THE best marketing strategy is to coach, coach and then go coach some more.** Is there a problem here that I'm missing? I don't think so!   #### **Here are 10 ways to fill your coaching business by coaching:** **1. To reach the moon, shoot for the stars.** What's a way bigger goal than filling your coaching businesess? Shoot for that and fill your business in the process. One fantastic way to do this is to coach many more people than you think you need to. **2.  Get a system.** All a business is, is a system for making money. Systemize your coaching and create a business out of it. Coach a lot of people in a systematic process that provides value to others and build your business abilities at the same time. Everything will get easier. **3. Experiment. **Millions are made by 'gurus' who claim to have 'fool-proof' systems for making a killing. Usually it's only the gurus making the killing. To find your own best system, experiment and expect some failures. Every successful coach fails some of the time and then learns from each failure. **4. Track your progress.** Set goals for yourself along the way (you can call them intentions, if you prefer). Watch how you're doing over time. You should be improving. If not, tweak your system. Make it fun by making a game out of it. **5. Remember it's not about you. **Get your focus off yourself and your needs and focus on assisting your potential clents. If you need to get a side job, go for it! Most new coaches have a side income in the beginning. **6. Build relationships. **You'd be surprised how many people will HELP you build your business if you give them a chance. Some of them may become your clients; some of them may just tell everyone they know about you. But remember to be assisting them, too. **7. Learn to cement relationships.** Recognize when someone wants to work with you (they may be shy about showing it) and when they just need an invitation from you. In sales parlay this is known as 'closing the deal'. You do NOT need to be salesy to do it. In fact, salesy-ness can kill relationships. **8. Transform lives in minutes.** Fantastic coaching practically sells itself. If you give a complimentary session to someone, solve their problem, and they don't buy your coaching package, you didn't give fantastic coaching. Get ongoing feedback on your coaching and you'll become a fantastic coach faster. **9. Collect outcomes, results, testimonials and referrals.** The more great coaching you do, the more attractive your track record becomes. People need to see your track record, so don't be shy about sharing it. **10. But an excellent coach with great marketing skills will trump the mediocre coach in the long haul.   Too many coaches mistake *getting clients* with coaching success. That's only half the equation. *Keeping clients* is what gives us sustainable success. When a good percentage of your clients stay for years, rather than months, the time and money you need to spend on marketing is hugely reduced. And if you've got a reputation as an excellent coach, referrals will come effortlessly.   Getting Clients + Keeping Clients = Sustainable Success Effortless Referrals + Keeping Clients = Less Marketing   See how excellence is the key to having sustainable success AND the freedom to live the great life that coaches love to talk about (even though they're working seven days a week at marketing)? Without excellence, you're stuck on that marketing merry-go-round of having to sell, Sell, SELL.   Phew! Wears me out to think about it!   Coaching excellence lives at the leading edge; the developing edge that's constantly transcending and including what has gone before, while creating what's needed now. Coaches who possess excellence are willing to move out of their comfort zones regularly in order evolve ahead of the masses. It's our job to lead.   That's why I'm asking what coaching excellence means to you. We're constantly creating it, so no one ever completely knows what it is. We need to keep asking.
