People Who Are Coaches Will Be The Norm

November 25th, 2008

Dear Mastery Coach,

Donna Steinhorn, my friend and colleague, reminded me the other day that coaching is one of those professions that does well during recessions, because people turn to coaches even more during uncertain times. In fact, both of us have picked up a few new clients in the last several weeks and I hardly even noticed the last recession, when I was first building my coaching business. Coaching is still booming and is predicted to be one of the hottest professional skill sets of this century. As Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric said, “"People who are coaches will be the norm. Other people won’t get promoted." Join the next live “Become a Masterful Coach” eClass here.

That said, business and marketing strategies that work in a recession are a little different from those that work in boom markets. To that end, we have several classes listed in this issue that you may need to take to flourish in this current weird economy.

You might also be inspired by Servant Entrepreneur: The Horse Story on how a little creativity can go a long way toward building a successful business. And check the announcement at the end that tells you how you can save a lot of money for a short time. (Grandpa Watson is at it again!)

And if saving money sounds good to you right now, you’ll love our new Tw00t Alerts! Once or twice per month (whenever the mood strikes us) you get to save serious dough on a coaching must-have for just 24 hours. Servant Entrepreneur: The Horse Story

Horse & CarriageIf you missed last month’s parable about how my Grandpa Watson supported his family selling pianos in the Great Depression, click here. See if these stories give you any ideas about succeeding with your own business in this wild economy.

One day Grandpa came home with a horse tied to the back of his car.

Grandma (she was the practical one) hit the roof: What were they going to do with a horse pooping in their yard? Grandpa had found a family that really wanted to buy a piano, but just couldn’t swing the payments. “Well, have you got anything to trade?” Grandpa asked them. All they could come up with was a young horse they didn’t need and didn’t want to feed. Grandpa accepted the horse and lowered their payments on the piano.

“Don’t worry, I’ve got a plan,” he told Grandma. Next day the trash collector came by on his route with his wagon pulled by an elderly horse that looked so tired folks felt sorry for it. Grandpa knew the trash collector was worried the horse would die and put him out of business. “Look here, Grandpa said to the man, “You need a younger horse and I’ve got one I don’t need. How about swapping me for him, in exchange for free trash pickup for the next two years?”

The man liked the idea but his old horse was like a member of his family and the small field next to his house wouldn’t feed two horses. “I thought of that,” Grandpa said. “You’re going to need to buy some feed for your horses, especially this young one, because he’ll be doing a lot of work for you, but I know families down the road, outside city limits, that want trash pickup. With this young horse you could expand your route and make a profit and your old horse would get a friend.” The man saw that Grandpa was right and gladly accepted the deal.

Grandpa made some money and saved some money with this deal. In time, it added up to the price of a piano. In exchange, several families and a couple of horses got better lives, too. Grandpa was a Servant Entrepreneur before we invented the term. How could you use your imagination to make the world a better place while you prosper?
