1. Coaching For Plumpy Nut

I just got off a phone call with former Vice President and Nobel Laureate, Al Gore (who has a coach, by the way). He was announcing his plan to get the US power grid completely off carbon fuels and onto renewable energies within ten years. It sounds nuts until he reminds you that the US put a man on the moon in eight. Go Al! Watch the video here. To support him, go to www.WeCanSolveIt.org.

This and related topics have gotten me to thinking, that as coaches, we're here to help change the world and the main way we do it is by coaching people like Al Gore to step into their Personal Greatness and truly lead the way. And there's more that we could be doing. Is it time for us to do more, now?

A few days ago I asked the SCM Ad Hoc Committee to answer a question: "If You Had Only 4 Years to Save the World, How Would You Coach Differently?" Go here to read some of their replies. Watch the video that spurred me to ask, here

Would you spend $60 to save a babyThat brings me to Plumpy Nut. What on Earth is it, you ask? Well, it's some GOOD, good news that shows how simple many of our problems are, when we think a little differently.

But first I want to ask, "Would you spend $60 to save a baby from starving to death?" I had a feeling you would. And I have a free eCourse to give you, if you're willing to step up and do a little extra. Plumpy Nut not only saves little lives, it's a life saver for those of us who sometimes feel helpless or overwhelmed by the enormity of Earth's problems. You can be a genuine hero, someone who saves lives and SCM will acknowledge you in some cool ways.

As one coach from the UK said, "Initially, I see £60 when I look at $60, but after conversion it's actually around £30. When you think of £30 / $60 for 8 hours coach training - I think that's amazing! That's £3.75 / $7.50 per hour!! And the fact it's helping save lives is even more amazing."

Go here to read about Coaching for Pumpy Nut, get a fre*e Coaching eCourse and find out how you can be featured on our Coaching Superheroes page.

And then we'll all have to get busy coaching people to greatness and taking inspired action, ourselves, so those thriving babies have a planet to live on when they grow up.

2. As Coaches, by Natalie Tucker Miller, IAC-CC

As coaches, we know the drill: True transformation with our clients can only happen when we are free of an agenda.

But why is this so important and how do we achieve this all important agenda-free status? The answers to these questions can be found in modern neuroscience research and a self-reflective look into how you, as a coach, could be just as susceptible as your clients to inferential thinking.

First, let's define what we mean by agenda. An agenda implies having a list of discrete items for which certain outcomes are expected. Many of us share a common conditioning that comes from cultural socializing that has us ask questions in which we have an expectation of an answer. In other words, questions are often used as tools to elicit a specific response. When this approach is used in coaching it considerably limits the possibilities for transformation.

3. Mastery Coach Tip of The Month - Interrupting The Client

Interrupting the Client is Class #1 in SCM’s Mastery 4: Processing in the Present Module. The following is from the M4-1 Coaching Guide:

You need to interrupt when the coaching has gone off track or down a tangent that isn’t useful.

Clues that you may need to interrupt your client:

  • You’re really curious about something.
  • You’ve heard this story before (perhaps over and over).
  • You get the feeling the client is avoiding something.
  • The client is preoccupied with the past and/or future.
  • Etc.

So how do you do it in a way that respects the client and keeps them open to hearing you? First, do it lightly and without an edge to your voice. Here are a few suggestions for how to cut in:

  • I’m sorry, do you mind if I interrupt?
  • That’s a great story. Do you mind if I ask you something?
  • By the way, is this what you’d like to coach on today?
  • Etc.

To learn the finer points in the art of interruption, take M4 Processing in The Present with Master Instructor, Natalie Tucker Miller. Go here to register.
