How Not to Coach: Get Psyched

Penn & Teller: What Do People Really Think of Coaching?

You may be familiar with the How Not to Coach video series in the Mastery Coach Exchange newsletter. This month's video is called "Get Psyched". (link to how not to coach at bottom of newsletter)

Penn & Teller's series on Showtime recently devoted a whole program to life coaching and although someone uploaded it (in 3 sections) to YouTube, it really doesn't fit the "How Not to Coach Format", so I thought I'd post the whole thing in the SCM blog and offer it up for buzz at the Mastery Coach Exchange forum.

Think it's flattering? Not! Watch the show here. (Curse alert!)

Meditation Goes High Tech

Can computer software give you a spiritual experience? Strangely, yes!

You probably know all the benefits. Research shows meditation promotes greater physical, mental and emotional health, as well as happiness, better concentration, less stress, etc. It also helps to eliminate disorders such as hypertension, asthma, insomnia and even Alzheimer's. In fact, some studies show it can help your mind evolve up to two levels, according to Integral Philosopher, Ken Wilber.

And I haven't even mentioned the spiritual benefits!

All this in mind, I tend to regard meditation as just as vital to wellbeing as going to the gym, so when my lifestyle changed recently in a way that seems to have wiped out my meditation practice, I started hunting for new ways to bring it back into my life…

Mastery Coach Tip of The Month

This is a new feature of the Mastery Coach Exchange. Each month, we'll share with you one tip from one of our Mastery Modules. This one is from Mastery #6: Clarifying, which will be taught on Tuesdays in February. More info here.

Path of Inquiry 3 types of questionsYour job is to reveal what the client really wants, find out what’s stopping them from having it and help them get it. The three types of questions in this graphic will help you do that. How?

  • When you reveal what’s wrong with the client’s situation, as well as what’s right (there are always benefits to problems; that’s why we have them), you uncover the Inner Dynamic of the situation.
  • When you reveal what’s wrong and what they want instead, you’ll find what’s in the way of getting what they want.
  • When you reveal what’s right with the status quo and what they want instead, you uncover what’s stopping them.

World's First 24-Hour Coach-a-thon

International Coaching Week Coach-a-thon

In honor of International Coaching Week, Greystone Guides is hosting the world's first 24-hour Coach-a-thon to benefit Houston's Northwest YMCA. It's a great service for a great cause.

The coaching, which is complimentary, is offered by some of the best coaches in the United States and you probably know some of them: Carrie Freed, Elizabeth Nofziger IAC-CC, Kathi Crawford, Art Gangel IAC-CC, Mattison Grey IAC-CC, Julia Stewart IAC-CC, Sarah Shah, Scott Sawyer, Arentta Yardbrough, Jane Saylor, Karen Kershner, and Patty Walters.

Anyone in the world who's interested in experiencing coaching is eligible to be coached in the Coach-a-thon, providing they do not currently have a coach and have not been in a coaching relationship in the last six months. People who are coached will be asked to donate to the YMCA and may choose to continue the coaching relationship for a fee. Send potential clients here.
