What ever happened to curiosity? I recently put together a new scorecard with the IAC Coaching Masteries™ for use in SCM's Certification Practicums and in the upcoming Certification
Prep Intensive in NYC.
As I sifted through info on the IAC website and in the new IAC Coaching Masteries™ eBook (recommended!) for skills to include in the new scorecard - we're currently scoring
with both IAC models through the end of this year - I was dismayed to find hardly any references to curiosity! (The only reference is in one section of Mastery #8)
I knew the Masteries didn't explicitly emphasize curiosity the way Thomas Leonard's proficiencies did, but hardly a reference to one of the foundations of masterful coaching? How dismaying!
Funny thing, though: When I score a coach using both our specially designed proficiency scorecard and the new mastery scorecard, the scores come out virtually the same! (I'd heard about this, too!) It's uncanny that two models with such different language, that are organized completely differently, can amount to the same measures,
but they do.
How is that possible? The new material recognizes the kinds of results that take place in a masterful coaching session - one where the coach explores throughout with curiosity - so curiosity is in there, it's just not obvious.
What does that mean to you? Well if you're seeking IAC Certification, don't be silly enough to skip curiosity, just because the IAC doesn't
spell out its importance. You can't do great coaching without it. In fact, you can't do anything great without it! That's why "Curiosity saves time" is one of the paradigms we use in the new SCM Module, "New Paradigms for Coaches")
The IAC has a different mandate from a coaching school, such as the School of Coaching Mastery. The IAC Certifiers aren't there to teach you how to coach; they are simply there to measure whether you are doing great coaching and to certify you, if you pass their rigorous test
process.
So the School of Coaching Mastery's IAC Coaching Masteries™ scorecard DOES include curiosity in a number of places, because when we score you, it's not to certify you, but to give you the tools to coach masterfully and to prepare you for what is perhaps the most rigorous coach certification process in the world - and we DO teach you how to coach! This variation in our scorecard doesn't change your score, it just expands your awareness. It's one of the ways that we expand your coaching expertise, by sharing with you
in detail, what skills you need to strengthen in order to pass the IAC Certification Process and by suggesting how you can do that. And curiosity is one very BIG skill!
How can you master the skill of curiosity and become a great coach? Well first, use it to serve your client and your client's goals. That'll put you on the road to Certification the fastest. We teach the skill of curiosity in a variety of ways at SCM. Without it, coaches are just wasting time!
