Coaching Tip: What You Can Learn About Success From a Magician

I just watched Magician, David Blaine, tell how he held his breath for over 17 minutes (!) on the new TEDMED.

It's an incredible story of commitment and dedication to a goal. He sums it all up (through tears) with, "It's practice. It's training. It's experiementing and it's pushing through the pain."

His emotion clearly adds one more: It's passion. Not the kind you manufacture in an 'Law of Attraction workshop', but the kind that scoops up your life and hurdles you forward with relentless intensity.

Watch out! You (and your coaching clients) may be inspired right out of your comfort zone! David tell his story here:

It's a very interesting talk but what he said at the end is priceless.

"It's practice and it's training and experimenting while pushing through the pain to be the best I can be"

As coaches people come to us because they are in some kind of pain, and they want out of that pain. What some coaches fail to realize is pain is essential to achievement and satisfaction. Yes, it does have has to be the right kind of pain. The pain must be connected to true desire. The highest achievers in our culture are the ones that are willing to put themeselves through the most pain daily to get what they really want.

If we help someone out of pain that they don't want, but don't help them find intensity and pain that they do want, what good have we done really?

Great point. Yeah, and it was that last statement that really grabbed me, partly because he started crying as he said it. He's not what I would normally call a 'great speaker', but his story's amazing, because he clearly endures insane amounts of pain in order to do what he does. Most of us wouldn't even want to, but as coaches, it's not up to us to decide whether we agree with a client's goals.

It's also not up to us to shield a client from pain. Pain is important and contrary to popular belief, it will NOT prevent you from getting what you want. However, trying to avoid unavoidable pain WILL prevent you from getting what you want.

I agree.

I think we spend a lot of time trying to avoid pain, when we should be looking for it.

My personal experience is that people have a lot of opinion and judgment about people choosing pain. When I tell people I do Crossfit, (a type of fitness philosophy that honors struggle and pain) many people, coaches included, tell me to my face that I am crazy and that it is bad for me.

Everyone needs pain, I am just fortunate enough to be able to choose how, where and when I get mine.

Maybe that is the essence of true freedom?

Well if there is anyone who is not crazy, it would be you! And in my opinion, you know yourself and understand the dynamics of success better than most coaches (and that's saying a lot).

A 100% pain free life is not possible and probably not desirable. Learning not to struggle with pain is how we free ourselves from suffering. So yes, I think you've found the essense of freedom.

People who haven't will think you're crazy. But you knew that!
